Review - The Astral Library
September 30, 2025
TITLE: The Astral Library
AUTHOR: Kate Quinn
RATING: ★★★
RELEASE DATE: February 17th, 2026
Summary (from Goodreads): Alexandria “Alix” Watson has learned one lesson from her barren childhood in the foster-care system: unlike people, books will never let you down. Working three dead-end jobs to make ends meet and knowing college is a pipe dream, Alix takes nightly refuge in the high-vaulted reading room at the Boston Public Library, escaping into her favorite fantasy novels and dreaming of far-off lands. Until the day she stumbles through a hidden door and meets the Librarian: the ageless, acerbic guardian of a hidden library where the desperate and the lost escape to new lives...inside their favorite books.
The Librarian takes a dazzled Alix under her wing, but before she can escape into the pages of her new life, a shadowy enemy emerges to threaten everyone the Astral Library has ever helped protect. Aided by a dashing costume-shop owner, Alix and the Librarian flee through the Regency drawing rooms of Jane Austen to the back alleys of Sherlock Holmes and the champagne-soaked parties of The Great Gatsby as danger draws inexorably closer. But who does their enemy really wish to destroy—Alix, the Librarian, or the Library itself?
REVIEW: First off, let me say that I’m a huge Kate Quinn fan, and I’m SO thankful she wrote a story that pays homage to books, libraries, and librarians. As a librarian myself, this really made my heart smile and made me even more proud of my profession. I love how Kate highlighted the infinite value of libraries and librarians and the numerous trials we are, unfortunately, dealing with right now, like budget cuts and censorship. Now, with that being said, I was honestly a bit disheartened with other aspects of The Astral Library. Namely, the political correctness that felt forced and out of place throughout the whole story, like it was put there just to reach a certain market or audience. It left a bad taste in my mouth, and that’s all I’m going to say about it. Every reader is different and will have their own opinion, as it should be. Overall, I would recommend this book, and it was nice seeing Kate branch out to a different genre, but I hope this won’t become the norm from here on out with her books. I would choose her historical work over and over again, but from now on I’ll be more picky with her other genres.

Recipe - Chicken Corn Chowder
September 28, 2025
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter or dairy-free butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, peeled and chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 1 garlic cloves, chopped
- 2 tablespoons all purpose flour or gluten-free flour
- 2 ½ cups corn, fresh or frozen kernels, divided (1 cup for blending and 1 1/2 cup left whole)
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 lb chicken tenders or boneless skinless chicken breast
- 2 8 oz each Yukon gold potatoes or russet potatoes, peeled (one diced and one cut in quarters for mashing later)
- 4 cups chicken broth or chicken bone broth
- Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste
- Chopped scallions or chives, for garnish
- Optional: If you want it creamier you can stir in some half and half or drizzle with cream at the end.
DIRECTIONS: Add the butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil to a large heavy pot or Dutch oven. When melted, add the onion, carrots, celery and garlic to the skillet and sauté until tender, about 8 to 10 minutes. Sprinkle with flour and sauté about 2 minutes, to cook out.
Meanwhile, blend 1 cup corn with 1 cup of the broth until mostly smooth. Add to the pot along with paprika, chicken, potatoes and remaining corn kernels. Pour in the chicken broth just enough to cover ingredients and bring to a boil.
Cover and simmer on low, 22 to 25 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the chicken is cooked through.
Remove the quartered potato, mash until smooth, and stir it back into the chowder. Shred the chicken with two forks. Taste the soup, adjust salt and pepper to taste, pour into 6 bowls, and garnish with fresh herbs.

Review - The Secret Book Society
September 25, 2025
TITLE: The Secret Book Society (audiobook)
AUTHOR: Madeline Martin
NARRATOR: Saskia Maarleveld
RATING: ★★★★
Summary (from Goodreads): You are cordially invited to the Secret Book Society…
London, 1895: Trapped by oppressive marriages and societal expectations, three women receive a mysterious invitation to an afternoon tea at the home of the reclusive Lady Duxbury. Beneath the genteel facade of the gathering lies a secret book club—a sanctuary where they can discover freedom, sisterhood, and the courage to rewrite their stories.
Eleanor Clarke, a devoted mother suffocating under the tyranny of her husband. Rose Wharton, a transplanted American dollar princess struggling to fit the mold of an aristocratic wife. Lavinia Cavendish, an artistic young woman haunted by a dangerous family secret. All are drawn to the enigmatic Lady Duxbury, a thrice-widowed countess whose husbands’ untimely deaths have sparked whispers of murder.
As the women form deep, heartwarming friendships, they uncover secrets about their marriages, their pasts, and the risks they face. Their courage is their only weapon in the oppressive world that has kept them silent, but when secrets are deadly, one misstep could cost them everything.
REVIEW: Another wonderful book by Madeline Martin! If you love stories about female empowerment and sisterhood, then The Secret Book Society is definitely one you should add to your to-be-read list. I truly loved the friendship and camaraderie between Lady Duxbury, Eleanor, Lavinia, and Rose. Each of them have their own individual struggles and heartaches, and the way they stand up for each other and cheer each other on is so endearing. I found myself rooting for them also, and I lost count of the many times I clapped loudly and yelled "You go, girl!" while driving and listening to this audiobook. LOL. Madeline Martin is such an amazing storyteller, and her words flow effortlessly and beautifully. Also, I feel like I'm always learning something new (historically) when I read her work, and this time was no different. I didn't realize during this time period how many women were sent to mental institutions just for not bending to the "rules" of this era, when it was looked down upon for women to read and - heaven forbid - have their own thoughts and opinions. And what can I say about my favorite narrator, Saskia Maarleveld, that I haven't already said countless times before? She is simply incredible. I would happily listen to her recite the alphabet over and over again. When she and Madeline Martin join forces on a story, it's pure magic.

Review: Twelve Children’s Books I’ve Adored Recently
September 24, 2025
It's not often I read children’s books, but now that I have grandchildren I find myself sampling more of them on NetGalley. I don’t order many at work because, unfortunately, there are very few children in the tiny community where my library is located. Luckily, though, three other libraries in our system reside next door to schools, and they have plenty of little patrons, so I enjoy sharing children’s book recommendations with those librarians. Below are some I’ve loved and recommended recently:

1. Just Enough Room for Christmas by Robin Currie
2. The Pumpkin Who Stayed for Christmas by Kelley M. Likes
3. The Heart that Found You by Anna Schocket
4. 12 Little Elves Save Christmas by Stephanie Campisi
5. Sploot by SaDonna Heathman
6. Waiting for Max: A NICU Story by Emily Rosen
7. Never Let a Unicorn Wear a Tutu by Diane Alber
8. Never Let a Unicorn Meet a Reindeer by Diane Alber
9. Never Let a Unicorn Get Spots by Diane Alber
10. You are Beloved by Jenny and Rev. Chris Lee
11. When Santa Wrote Back by Nathan Christopher
12. The Bumpy Pumpkin by Natalie Horseman

Fall is in the air! 🍁 Time for some fall-inspired healthy recipes!

- 1 cup white whole wheat flour
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3 tbsp butter, chilled (must be cold to cut into small pieces)
- 2 cups diced Granny Smith apples, peeled
For the glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- pinch nutmeg
- 2 tbsp cold fat free milk, plus 1/2 tbsp, if needed
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 375°F.
Combine the first five ingredients in a medium bowl, stirring with a whisk.
Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.
Combine the flours, baking powder, cinnamon nutmeg, and salt in another large bowl, stirring with a whisk.
Cut in chilled butter with a pastry blender, or you could use two knives, until the mixture resembles coarse meal.
Fold in diced minced apples.
Add buttermilk mixture, stirring just until moist.
Place dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly four times with floured hands.
Form dough into an 9-inch circle onto baking sheet, about 3/4″ thick. Using a knife, cut dough into 12 wedges all the way through.
Bake until golden, about 18-20 minutes, depending on your oven.
Place on a cooling rack about 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, to make the glaze: Mix powdered sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg with 2 tbsp of milk, adding 1/2 tbsp more (1 tsp at a time) if necessary to get the consistency to the right thickness. Stir until completely smooth.
Place scones on parchment or wax paper and drizzle the glaze over the scones using a spoon - or - place the glaze in a shallow bowl and dip the top of the scones into the glaze, then let it sit on the waxed paper to harden. Makes 12 scones.

Top Ten Tuesday - Literary/Bookish Candles I’d Make
September 16, 2025
Hello, dear readers! This week’s prompt from Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl is all about turning your favorite books into literary candles. Since I used to own a candle making business for many years, I knew this one would be extra fun for me. And so…welcome to my candle shop! Come on in and have a look around!
CANDLES AND SCENT DESCRIPTIONS:
1. I Remember You (inspired by V.E. Schwab’s The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue): An unforgettable scent with top notes of bergamot and camellias; followed by middle notes of lily, jasmine, and rose; finished with notes of exotic sandalwood.
2. Gooooooood Morning, Vietnam! (inspired by Kristin Hannah’s The Women): An intoxicating ensemble of green fern, bamboo stalks, vetiver, and patchouli, with undertones of hemp seed and oak moss. Peace! ✌🏼
3. Sucks Being You (inspired by Stephenie Meyers Twilight series): This alluring blend has warm notes of amber, incense, vanilla, and patchouli. A mysterious but fun mixture of sarcasm and blood-sucking seduction.
4. Midnight on the Bayou (inspired by Delia Owens’ Where the Crawdads Sing): This fragrance combines the warmth and mystery of an enchanted Louisiana bayou with an enticing blend of apricot nectar, mimosa petals, and cypress. A best seller!
5. Kiss from a Cannabis Rose (inspired by Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Daisy Jones and The Six): A far out fragrance with top notes of Bulgarian rose, bergamot, cannabis, and jasmine, with sensual underlying notes of dark chocolate, white musk, and oolong tea. It’s groovy, man! ☮️
6. Always (inspired by J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series): Spicy pomegranate, dewberry, and iris notes followed with subtle hints of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. All sealed with an eternal kiss and tears of unrequited love. A Severus Snape inspired favorite.
7. Marcellus Musings (inspired by Shelby Van Pelt’s Remarkably Bright Creatures): Invigorating oceanic top notes intermingling with lavender, pineapple, and melon, with bottom notes of fresh air and freedom.
8. Bacardi, Beaches, and Bad Decisions (inspired by Emily Henry’s People We Meet on Vacation): A tropical combination of coconut, mango, papaya, and wild watermelon with a splash of remorse and regret. (But no hangovers!)
9. Up Yonder in Them There Mountains (inspired by Kim Michele Richardson’s The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek): A complex fragrance blend of Granny Smith apples, oranges, and peaches, with floral middle notes of lily of the valley and violet. Base notes of woodsy oak leaves and oak moss round out this Appalachian inspired best seller.
10. Very Very Verity (inspired by Colleen Hoover’s Verity): A dark and twisted blend of persimmon, elderberries, currants, orange and cinnamon and rounded out with base notes of sugarcane and vanilla.
So, what do you think? Would you buy any of these candles?

Review - Isola
September 10, 2025
TITLE: Isola (audiobook)
AUTHOR: Allegra Goodman
NARRATOR: Fiona Hardingham
RATING: ★★★★
Summary (from Goodreads): Heir to a fortune, Marguerite is destined for a life of prosperity and gentility. Then she is orphaned, and her guardian—an enigmatic and volatile man—spends her inheritance and insists she accompany him on an expedition to New France. Isolated and afraid, Marguerite befriends her guardian’s servant and the two develop an intense attraction. But when their relationship is discovered, they are brutally punished and abandoned on a small island with no hope for rescue.
Once a child of privilege who dressed in gowns and laced pearls in her hair, Marguerite finds herself at the mercy of nature. As the weather turns, blanketing the island in ice, she discovers a faith she’d never before needed.
Inspired by the real life of a sixteenth-century heroine, Isola is the timeless story of a woman fighting for survival.
REVIEW: Such a beautiful but heart-wrenching story. To know that it’s inspired by the real struggles of a real person who survived such an ordeal makes it even more incredible. I can’t imagine what it must have been like being stranded on a desolate island for two years. Marguerite is such an admirable woman, and what an unforgettable experience it was to witness her spiritual, physical, and mental growth throughout this story. This was my first time reading Allegra Goodman’s work, and her writing is magnificent. And what can I say about one of my favorite narrators, Fiona Hardingham? She is absolutely amazing. Through Allegra’s flawless writing and Fiona’s impeccable narration, I felt it all - the joy, the heartache, the happiness, the loss…but above all else, the hope and the will to survive. I would highly recommend Isola to everyone.

Top Ten Tuesday - My Favorite Book Villains
September 09, 2025
Hello, dear readers! This week’s prompt from Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl is favorite villains. I had trouble coming up with ten, but here are six villains for you. Happy Tuesday!
🐶 Cruella deVille in the 101 Dalmations - Anyone who steals puppies or any other animal for cruel intentions places top spot on my villain list.
🍖 Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs - He’s a cannibal, and he’s also a genius. A dangerous combination.
⓬ President Snow in The Hunger Games - Cold and calculating. The perfect villain.
🐈 Professor Delores Umbridge in the Harry Potter series - I can’t put into words how much I absolutely DESPISE this woman. She’s just plain evil.
👠 The Stepmother from Cinderella - Was she ever given a name? If so, I don’t remember it. I’ve had my share of petty and conniving step-mother’s in my lifetime, but Cinderella’s takes the cake.
🪄 Voldemort from the Harry Potter series - Can’t finish out this list without including my favorite villain from my favorite book series. This dude has some serious issues, but the push and pull between him and Harry throughout the entire series is what makes these books so dynamic and magical. Love them!
