Review - The Yellow Wife
June 19, 2024
TITLE: The Yellow Wife (audiobook)
AUTHOR: Sadeqa Johnson
NARRATOR: Robin Miles
RATING: ★★★★
Summary (from Goodreads): In the tradition of Wench and Twelve Years a Slave, this harrowing story follows an enslaved woman forced to barter love and freedom while living in the most infamous slave jail in Virginia.
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Brown was promised her freedom on her eighteenth birthday.
But when her birthday finally comes around, instead of the idyllic life she was hoping for with her true love, she finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half-Acre, a jail where slaves are broken, tortured, and sold every day. Forced to become the mistress of the brutal man who owns the jail, Pheby faces the ultimate sacrifice to protect her heart in this powerful, thrilling story of one slave’s fight for freedom.
REVIEW: Such a great book! I chose the audiobook version, and I’m SO glad I did because the narrator, Robin Miles, is absolutely incredible. Without a doubt, she brought this book to life. This was my first time reading Sadeqa Johnson’s work, and it certainly won’t be my last. One thing that always stands out to me with historical fiction is the amount of research the author went through while writing his/her book, and it was easy to see just how much research this author endured. In her author’s notes she even describes the real life historical events that inspired the story, and it fascinated me because it was a part of history I’d never heard of before. The story itself is heartbreaking, but the main character, Pheby Delores Brown, is resilient, courageous, and someone I truly admired. She went through more heartache in her young life than most people experience in a lifetime, but she faced it with a tenacity that had me cheering her on throughout the entire story. As a mother, I understood her fierce determination to protect her children, and I was so thankful for the happy ending. It was the closure I hoped for and needed, especially after becoming so invested and immersed in these characters lives. I would highly recommend The Yellow Wife to everyone.

I've been wanting to read this book for awhile now and your review makes me want to move it up in the queue. I'm always looking for a good audiobook, so I think I'll see if I can find it on audio at my library. Thanks for the rec!
ReplyDeleteThe audiobook is amazing! I'm so glad I went with it instead of the ebook. It's a great book either way, but Robin Miles did a fantastic job and always kept me interested and entertained. I hope you enjoy it!
