Review - People We Meet On Vacation

TITLE:
People We Meet on Vacation
AUTHOR: Emily Henry
RATING: ★★★★

Summary (from Goodreads): Two best friends. Ten summer trips. One last chance to fall in love.

Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. They have nothing in common. She’s a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. And somehow, ever since a fateful car share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. For most of the year they live far apart—she’s in New York City, and he’s in their small hometown—but every summer, for a decade, they have taken one glorious week of vacation together.

Until two years ago, when they ruined everything. They haven’t spoken since.

Poppy has everything she should want, but she’s stuck in a rut. When someone asks when she was last truly happy, she knows, without a doubt, it was on that ill-fated, final trip with Alex. And so, she decides to convince her best friend to take one more vacation together—lay everything on the table, make it all right. Miraculously, he agrees.

Now she has a week to fix everything. If only she can get around the one big truth that has always stood quietly in the middle of their seemingly perfect relationship. What could possibly go wrong?

REVIEW: This was a very sweet friends-to-lovers story. This trope is one of my favorite types, and Emily Henry did it justice. The characters were relatable, and the growing attraction between the two main characters flowed at a good pace. I don't know about anyone else, but I love the build up. *smile* Recommended!

Review - Redeeming Love

TITLE:
Redeeming Love
RATING: ★★★★★
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Summary (from Goodreads): California’s gold country, 1850. A time when men sold their souls for a bag of gold and women sold their bodies for a place to sleep.

Angel expects nothing from men but betrayal. Sold into prostitution as a child, she survives by keeping her hatred alive. And what she hates most are the men who use her, leaving her empty and dead inside.

Then she meets Michael Hosea. A man who seeks his Father’s heart in everything, Michael Hosea obeys God’s call to marry Angel and to love her unconditionally. Slowly, day by day, he defies Angel’s every bitter expectation until, despite her resistance her frozen heart begins to thaw.

But with her unexpected softening come overwhelming feelings of unworthiness and fear. And so Angel runs. Back to the darkness, away from her husband’s pursuing love, terrified of the truth she can no longer deny: Her final healing must come from the One who loves her even more than Michael Hosea does…the One who will never let her go.

A life-changing story of God’s unconditional, redemptive, all-consuming love.

REVIEW: What a beautiful story! I had never heard about this book or author until I saw the preview to the movie a couple of weeks ago. I was intrigued, so I decided to give Francine Rivers a try. I'm SO GLAD I did! First of all, anyone who thinks this book is about Angel and Michael's love story is mistaken. Yes, in a roundabout way it is about them falling in love, but the most important fact you take away from this book is the power of God's redeeming love. Angel learned through Michael that God truly loved her, even if her past made her feel that she wasn't worthy of love. Michael's unyielding faith and his devotion to her made me cry. No, actually, I WEPT. Please read this book, especially if you need a reminder of just how much God loves YOU too.

Review - Verity

TITLE:
Verity
RATING: ★★★★

Summary (from Goodreads): Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity's notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn't expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity's recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen's feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife's words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

REVIEW: I didn’t know what to expect when I started this book, but I ended up pleasantly surprised. It’s not the usual Colleen Hoover book I’m used to reading, with the complex love story and emotional angst, but that’s okay, because Verity still kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Talk about your creepy characters! Getting to know Verity, there were many times I shook my head in disbelief, mumbling “OH.MY.GOD!” to no one in particular because I was so stunned at her actions throughout this book. And that ending…WOW! I won’t give away any spoilers, but it caught me off guard and left me questioning the entire story - in a good way. I like books that keep me on my toes and keep me guessing the way Verity did. Thumbs up, Colleen! Well done!
