Top Ten Tuesday - Reading Habits

Hello, dear readers! Today's Top Ten Tuesday prompt is brought to you by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl, and today we're talking about how my reading habits have changed through the years. Maybe some of these will resonate with you too. Happy Tuesday!

🧡 THERE’S MORE THAN ONE GENRE - From the time I read my first romance novel when I was fourteen years old until just a few years ago, I read strictly romance books. Now, don’t get me wrong, I still love them dearly, but I eventually grew tired of reading the same tropes over and over again. So I started reaching for historical fiction a couple of years ago, and I immediately fell in love. I’ve been devouring everything by Kristin Hannah, Kate Quinn, and Kristin Harmel - just to name a few. Books based during the World War II era are my favorite.

⏰ LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO WASTE ON BAD BOOKS - Once upon a time, when I started a book I would finish it no matter how bad it was, but I don’t do that anymore. Maybe it’s getting older. Maybe it’s my patience wearing thin with age. I don’t know. All I do know is that if I can’t get hooked within the first couple of chapters then I'm done.

🎧 THERE’S MORE TO LIFE THAN PRINT BOOKS - Another thing I was adamant about in my younger years was reading ONLY print books because I felt that audiobooks and ebooks didn’t count. (I know…ridiculous, right?) I just started using audiobooks within the past year, and I LOVE THEM! It takes me 45 minutes to get to work, so that gives me a lot of listening time, and I’m really enjoying it. I still read print books and ebooks from time to time, but I usually fall asleep if I get too comfortable in my recliner or bed when I try to read them. LOL.

🚫 CHALLENGE (NOT) ACCEPTED - I used to take part in every reading challenge I came across, but I don’t join any now because I always feel rushed to complete them, and I get angry with myself if I don’t reach my goal. I’m bad about comparing my progress to other readers too, and President Roosevelt was right when he said “Comparison is the thief of joy”. Well, I don’t want anything stealing my joy of reading.

🥈 NOT POPULAR? THAT’S OKAY! - Bestseller lists don’t interest me anymore, and I don’t focus on what’s “in” or what Oprah, Jenna, or Reese are reading. I don’t have to have “the next best thing” unless it’s by one of my favorite authors. I just read what makes my little heart happy.

Have a great day!

  1. I love your last one. There are so many great books out there that aren’t on the bestseller list.

  3. I've only started getting into audiobooks, but I'm hoping to listen to them a lot more from now on. I also agree with not just reading bestsellers. I hardly know whether a book is a best seller when I pick it up :). It was fun learning about your reading habits.

  4. I relate to a lot of these. Audiobooks have been a game changer for me as well. I don't have a commute, but I listen while I drive around running errands, while I exercise, and while I clean house. It makes tedious chores much more enjoyable!

    Happy TTT!

    1. Agreed! I listened to my audiobook a couple of days ago while I was helping my husband paint our house, and it definitely made the work more enjoyable. Thank you for visiting, Susan! Happy Wednesday!

  5. I'm the opposite, I only stick to romance now because I don't get much enjoyment out of other genres anymore. Although I will read a romantic mystery or romantic suspense. I agree with the bestseller lists, they rarely recommend anything (if ever) that I would find interesting so I don't even look at those lists anymore.

  6. I don't follow bestseller lists or celebrity endorsements of books either. And I, too, DNF books much faster these days than I used to. Fun TTT post. :D

  7. Sometimes it might take a little longer to enjoy the book though. When I really feel I won't like it, I won't be pushing through. But I give it at least half of it unless I get a bad feeling by it.

  8. It seems many of us felt the compulsion to finish a book no matter what when we were younger, and with time lose the compulsion. Myself included. Yep, I’m not a joiner either. I hate having to rush.

  9. I envy people who have cultivated the ability to DNF books...I still can't seem to do it. Although I've been known to have books on my "currently reading" shelf for months at a time while I finished dozens of other books. I hope you have a great weekend. - Katie
