Top Ten Tuesday - Books I Read in School
October 15, 2024
Hello, dear readers! Today's Top Ten Tuesday prompt is brought to you by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl, and today we're talking about books I was assigned to read in school. Now, I went to school during the dinosaur age, so this one was kind of tough for me, considering the ole brain isn't what it used to be. I can hardly remember what I read last year, much less 30+ years ago. So, with that being said, there aren't ten books on my list, but these are the few I can remember:
1. Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson - This one wasn't assigned to me but chosen for a book report. I know I loved the book, but I can't recall anything about the plot other than it was sad.
2. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens - I don't remember much about this book either other than I didn't particularly care for it. I've read a few Dickens books since then, and the only one I have enjoyed is A Christmas Carol.
3. Charlotte's Web by E.B. White - This book broke my little heart in middle school, and it still does.
4. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne - I enjoyed this book, even though it did annoy me that Hester Prynne was treated like such a pariah. I know you have to consider the day and age it was written in, but still...it irked me.
5. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens - Another Dickens book I didn't care about, but I do remember it was better than A Tale of Two Cities.
Happy Tuesday!

DeleteI remember The Scarlet Letter. It wasn’t one of my favorites.

Thanks for visiting! Happy Tuesday!
DeleteI somehow made it through high school and a college degree in English without ever reading a whole Dickens novel. Ha ha. I do love A CHRISTMAS CAROL, which I reread every year, if that counts!
ReplyDeleteHappy TTT!
Yes, that definitely counts! I watch A Christmas Carol on DVD every Christmas, but that probably doesn't count towards reading the book. LOL. Happy Wednesday, Susan!
DeleteI've read A Bridge to Terabithia, but I didn't have to read it for school. I did have to read both A Scarlet Letter and Tale of Two Cities. And I thought they were both good, but not ones I ended up loving. :D
ReplyDeleteSame here, Lark. Thank you for visiting! Happy Wednesday!
DeleteCharlotte's Web is a heartbreaker!
ReplyDeleteYes it is! I can't read it or watch the DVD without bawling like a baby. Thank you for visiting, Gabby! Happy Wednesday!
DeleteGreat list! I don't think I've read any of these yet, but I do remember watching the movie for Bridge to Terabithia. It was really sad, so I guess they didn't stray too much from the source material :)

I haven't watched the movie, but if it's anything like the book then I'm sure I'd probably cry like a baby. Thank you for visiting! Happy Wednesday!
DeleteI liked The Scarlet Letter when I read it on my own...when it was assigned reading the very next year, I hated it. I hope you have a fabulous weekend. - Katie

Thanks Katie! I hope you have a great weekend too!
DeleteYou and I have The Tale of Two Cities in common. I ended up enjoying the book, but I haven’t been eager to pick up any of his other books.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting, Olivia! Have a great week!
