Top Ten Tuesday - Best Books I Read in 2024

Hello, dear readers! Today’s Top Ten Tuesday prompt from Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl is the best books I read in 2024. I stumbled upon some really great books this year, and it was hard to pick just ten. I discovered an amazing new-to-me author (Kate Quinn), and I listened to some wonderful new-to-me narrators (Saskia Maarleveld and Xe Sands). All of these books were audiobooks, except for The Paradise Problem, and I highly recommend the audiobook versions. I can’t wait to see what 2025 brings. HAPPY TUESDAY and HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🎉

1. The Briar Club by Kate Quinn
2. The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn
3. The Rose Code by Kate Quinn
4. The Flight Girls by Noelle Salazar
5. The Dutch House by Ann Patchett
6. Yellow Wife by Sadeqa Johnson
7. Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
8. Educated by Tara Westover

Recipe - Pork Tenderloin with Cherry Sauce

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 cup less-sugar cherry preserves
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 lbs pork tenderloin
  • Olive oil spray
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 400F. Trim and remove any silver skin from the pork tenderloin. Bring balsamic to a boil and cook over low heat until reduced to 3 tablespoons, about 5 minutes. Stir in cherry preserves; cook 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in thyme. Combine garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Rub over pork. Heat a cast iron skillet over medium high heat and spray with oil. Brown the pork tenderloin on all sides. Spoon half of the glaze over the pork and transfer to the oven. Bake until the internal temperature reaches 145F. Depending on the thickness, this will range anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes so using a thermometer is a must so it’s not dried out. Let it rest tented with foil 10 minutes before slicing. Slice into 12 slices. Spoon remaining cherry sauce over the pork.

NOTES: The best tip for not overcooking pork tenderloin is to use a meat thermometer to monitor the internal temperature. Here’s how to do it:
  • Cook to the right temperature: Remove the pork tenderloin from the heat when it reaches 145°F (63°C) in the thickest part. This ensures it’s safe to eat while staying juicy and tender.
  • Rest the meat: Let the pork rest for at least 5 minutes after cooking. The temperature will rise slightly due to carryover cooking, reaching the perfect doneness.
  • Avoid overcooking: Keep an eye on the pork as it cooks, especially since tenderloin is a lean cut and can dry out quickly.

Review - Say You’ll Remember Me

TITLE:
Say You’ll Remember Me
AUTHOR: Abby Jimenez
RATING: ★★★★
RELEASE DATE: April 1st, 2025

Summary (from Goodreads): There might be no such a thing as a perfect guy, but Xavier Rush comes disastrously close. A gorgeous veterinarian giving Greek god vibes—all while cuddling a tiny kitten? Immediately yes. That is until Xavier opens his mouth and proves that even sculpted gods can say the absolute wrong thing. Like, really wrong. Of course, there’s nothing Samantha loves more than proving an asshole wrong…

. . . unless, of course, he can admit he made a mistake. But after one incredible and seemingly endless date—possibly the best in living history—Samantha is forced to admit the truth, that her family is in crisis and any kind of relationship would be impossible. Samantha begs Xavier to forget her. To remember their night together as a perfect moment, as crushing as that may be.

Only no amount of distance or time is nearly enough to forget that something between them. And the only thing better than one single perfect memory is to make a life—and even a love—worth remembering.

REVIEW: What a great little love story! This is the first book I’ve read by Abby Jimenez, and I enjoyed it so much I finished it in two days. The snarky dialogue made me laugh out loud SO many times, and the emotional moments brought tears to my eyes. This is a funny yet moving story about a family dealing with dementia, and Xavier is an admirable hero you can’t help but swoon over. Samantha is a down-to-earth and relatable heroine, and she’s also someone to admire. I would highly recommend Say You’ll Remember Me to everyone. It was a nice little break from historical fiction for me, and I look forward to reading more of Jimenez’s work in the future.

Review - The Lies We Leave Behind

TITLE:
The Lies We Leave Behind (audiobook)
NARRATORS: Xe Sands and Patrick Zeller
RATING: ★★★★

Summary (from Goodreads): Somewhere in the Pacific, 1943. Kate Campbell is a nurse who bravely flies back and forth from the front to rescue wounded soldiers, amid long days, harsh conditions and often dangerous weather. Driven by a deep personal need to help in the war effort, she is conflicted when an injury results in her reassignment to the relative comfort of the English countryside.

Love has never been part of her plan, but despite herself, she falls for an officer with three bullet wounds, startling blue eyes and a wicked sense of humor. For the first time, Kate sees a future far from the horrors of war and hate. But before she can pursue it, a secret from her past calls her to duty, and she'll have to travel back into danger one more time to rescue a part of herself she'd left behind. But will she make it back? And will that future still be waiting for her if she does?

REVIEW: As always, Noelle Salazar broke my heart - but in a good way. When my heart aches and/or I cry while listening to or reading a book then you can be rest assured the writing and narrating is amazing. That was the case with The Lies We Leave Behind. Noelle has such a beautiful way with words. Her descriptions are so vivid I can picture everything in my mind as the story unfolds, and I feel as if I’m there witnessing it all. My emotions were all over the place while listening to this book. Historical fiction has always been my favorite genre, especially those that take place during World War II, but it’s taken on a whole new meaning for me since my youngest son recently enlisted in the military. Reading about the horrors of war hits differently when you know your child could be in the midst of it someday. I adored Kate and William’s love story. I’m glad William was able to move on and get married after he thought he’d lost Kate, but it really saddened me that she didn’t find love again, especially after the horrible things she went through. Xe Sands is an incredible narrator, but I have to admit it took me awhile to warm up to Patrick Zeller’s narrating. He has a very deep and rich voice that kind of startled me at first, but by the end of the book I was sobbing over the tremor and emotion that resonated in his voice when he found out the truth. It was very moving. I would highly recommend The Lies We Leave Behind to everyone.

Recipe - Snowman Chocolate Bark (Christmas)

Ready for some healthy Christmas recipes? Here we go! ⛄️

INGREDIENTS:
  • 9 ounces sugar-free chocolate chips
  • 27 mini marshmallows
  • 1 teaspoon white sprinkles
  • Pretzel sticks cut into 1/2 inch pieces (for the arms)
  • Edible ink markers in orange and black
DIRECTIONS: Line a small 9 x 13-inch sheet pan with parchment paper. Set aside. Using the edible markers, make a snowman face on 9 small marshmallows. Plan where you will be placing the snowman so they will be easy to cut equally later. Have your pretzels cut and ready because once the chocolate hardens they won’t stick. Pour the chocolate into a medium microwave-safe bowl. Melt the chocolate in the microwave, stirring the chocolate every 30 seconds to help avoid seizing. Once melted and smooth, set aside. When you’re ready, pour chocolate onto the prepared baking sheet, spreading with a rubber spatula into a smooth layer almost to the edge. Quickly add the marshmallows to create your snowmen, then add the pretzel arms and lastly add the sprinkles, for snow. Allow the bark to set completely in the refrigerator, about 30 minutes. Once hardened, break into 9 pieces about 1 ounce each. Keep bark stored in an airtight container refrigerated or in a in a cool, dry place for up to 1 week.

Review - The Flight Girls

TITLE:
The Flight Girls (audiobook)
NARRATOR: Xe Sands
RATING: ★★★★

Summary (from Goodreads): Inspired by the real team of female pilots who trained World War II soldiers, The Flight Girls is a stunning debut novel about friendship and its power to make us soar. Audrey Coltrane has always wanted to fly. It's why she implored her father to teach her at the little airfield back home in Texas. It's why she signed up to train military pilots in Hawaii when the war in Europe began. And it's why she insists she is not interested in any dream-derailing romantic involvements, even with the disarming Lieutenant James Hart, who fast becomes a friend as dear as the women she flies with. Then one fateful day, she gets caught in the air over Pearl Harbor just as the bombs begin to fall, and suddenly, nowhere feels safe. Following the attack, Audrey struggles to reconcile her devastating losses--colleagues, friends and the piece of her heart she left in the air. She seizes the opportunity to join the Women Airforce Service Pilots, hoping to make everything she's lost count for something. The fast friendships she forms with her fellow WASP women reignites a spark of hope in the face of a war that moves closer to home every day. When James goes missing in action, those bonds help her summon the courage to cross the front lines and give her the faith that they will return stateside--together.

REVIEW: Dear readers, if you've read any of my reviews over the past couple of years then you already know I'm a huge fan of historical fiction. You should also know I'm a big fan of Noelle Salazar too, so this review will probably come as no surprise to you. I don't know why it's taken me so long to read The Flight Girls, but I'm so glad I did. I believe this is the first historical fiction book I've read with the bombing of Pearl Harbor as a focal point, and Noelle does such an amazing job (as always) describing the horrors from that day and really putting you in the heroine's place so that you can see it and feel it from her perspective. The narrator, Xe Sands, also did an excellent job portraying the heroine, Audrey, and the many other characters in the story. This was my first time listening to her, and I look forward to listening to more of her work.

So many emotions come to the surface while listening to this book. I laughed. I cried. I swooned. I gasped. The friendships between the women pilots is so endearing, and I loved cheering them on. I clapped over their accomplishments and fumed over the disheartening lack of recognition they endured. My heart ached for them during their times of loss and soared with them through their times of joy. I felt like I knew each one of them by the time the story ended, thanks to Noelle's incredible storytelling. The ending was beautiful and perfect, and I was honestly sad when the story ended. I highly recommend The Flight Girls to everyone.
