Review - Bite Club

TITLE:
Bite Club
RATING: ★★★★
RELEASE DATE: May 4th, 2023

Summary (from Goodreads): Dramatic and inspiring accounts from survivors of the most shocking shark and other animal attacks from around the world.

It’s a trauma like no other. Being perceived as a threat or, worse, hunted as food makes an animal attack a unique ordeal. Suddenly you’re helpless, at its mercy. When an animal strikes it is lightning fast, determined and can’t be reasoned with. Often brutally violent, such an attack can leave horrific injuries, both physical and emotional that endure long after the encounter. '

Whether it’s a great white shark, a bear, lion, or other deadly predator, the impact such attacks can have on the victim, their families, the communities, and the wider human psyche is often profound and enduring. And when you add the media attention that such incidents often attract, the actual bite might not be the only attack a survivor has to endure.

In Bite Club , we meet brave people from around the world who have come face to face with sharks or other deadly predators and lived to tell the tale. And we learn of the group of survivors who are supporting each other to navigate, recover and grow from what is for many, their most traumatic experience ever.

REVIEW: First off, I’m terrified of water I can’t see the bottom in, so I NEVER go swimming in the ocean. The only big body of water you’ll find me in is a swimming pool. Secondly, I’ve always been fascinated by the ocean and shark attacks. Crazy, huh? So, when I saw this book on shark (and other apex predator) encounters, I had to read it. The survivors stories are truly admirable and inspirational, and the pictures included are both jaw-dropping and nauseating. (There’s a trigger warning on the book cover so consider yourself warned). But these are true stories of horrifying animal attacks, and you get it all, right down to the gory pictures and every little detail of the person’s experience, and I really liked that. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is because of the many grammatical and spelling errors. (PLEASE TELL ME THIS IS AN UNEDITED COPY!) Maybe it’s the British or Australian way of speaking, but every time I saw “in hospital” instead of “in the hospital” I died a little inside. It’s published in the UK, and most of the stories are told by Australian survivors, so perhaps there’s a language barrier there. I honestly don’t know, but the misspelling and numerous other grammatical errors were very distracting. I sincerely hope, if this IS an unedited copy, that they will hire a professional editor and go through it again with a fine tooth comb before publishing.

Review - Walking with Sam

TITLE:
Walking with Sam
RATING: ★★★★
RELEASE DATE: May 9th, 2023

Summary (from Goodreads): An intimate, funny, and poignant travel memoir following  New York Times  bestselling author and actor Andrew McCarthy as he walks the Camino de Santiago with his son Sam.

When Andrew McCarthy's eldest son began to take his first steps into adulthood, McCarthy found himself wishing time would slow down. Looking to create a more meaningful connection with Sam before he fled the nest, as well as recreate his own life-altering journey decades before, McCarthy decided the two of them should set out on a trek like few 500 miles across Spain's Camino de Santiago.

Over the course of the journey, the pair traversed an unforgiving landscape, having more honest conversations in five weeks than they'd had in the preceding two decades.  Discussions of divorce, the trauma of school, McCarthy's difficult relationship with his own father, fame, and Flaming Hot Cheetos threatened to either derail their relationship or cement it.   Walking With Sam  captures this intimate, candid and hopeful expedition as the father son duo travel across the country and towards one another.

REVIEW: Okay… I will wholeheartedly admit that the main reason I wanted to read this book is because I spent most of the 80’s (my teenage years) pining after Andrew McCarthy. His posters blanketed my bedroom walls, and I could recite every line from his movies (especially Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire). But, anyway, I digress. I will also confess that I had never heard of the Camino de Santiago until I read this book. One of the main highlights of this story - in my opinion - is Andrew’s telling of the Camino’s history. This was my first time reading his work, and he has such a beautiful and eloquent way with words. I could almost picture in my mind every detail of their walk, from the cathedrals to the rustic towns along the way and all the fascinating people they met in between. When they finally reached Santiago, I cheered right along with them. I can only imagine what a truly amazing experience it was for them to share this adventure together. Well done, gentlemen…well done! šŸ‘

Review - The True Love Experiment

TITLE:
The True Love Experiment
RATING: ★★★★★
RELEASE DATE: May 16th, 2023

Summary (from Goodreads): Sparks fly when a romance novelist and a documentary filmmaker join forces to craft the perfect Hollywood love story and take both of their careers to the next level—but only if they can keep the chemistry between them from taking the whole thing off script.

Felicity “Fizzy” Chen is lost. Sure, she’s got an incredible career as a beloved romance novelist with a slew of bestsellers under her belt, but when she’s asked to give a commencement address, it hits her: she hasn’t been practicing what she’s preached.

Fizzy hasn’t ever really been in love. Lust? Definitely. But that swoon-worthy, can’t-stop-thinking-about-him, all-encompassing feeling? Nope. Nothing. What happens when the optimism she’s spent her career encouraging in readers starts to feel like a lie?

Connor Prince, documentary filmmaker and single father, loves his work in large part because it allows him to live near his daughter. But when his profit-minded boss orders him to create a reality TV show, putting his job on the line, Connor is out of his element. Desperate to find his romantic lead, a chance run-in with an exasperated Fizzy offers Connor the perfect solution. What if he could show the queen of romance herself falling head-over-heels for all the world to see? Fizzy gives him a hard pass—unless he agrees to her list of demands. When he says yes, and production on The True Love Experiment begins, Connor wonders if that perfect match will ever be in the cue cards for him, too.

The True Love Experiment is the book fans have been waiting for ever since Fizzy’s debut in The Soulmate Equation. But when the lights come on and all eyes are on her, it turns out the happily ever after Fizzy had all but given up on might lie just behind the camera.

REVIEW: What a ride! This book was so much fun! I have to admit that I have never EVER liked reality TV shows, but I would fangirl like crazy if there was an actual True Love Experiment show with actual Connor and Fizzy’s on it. In true Christina Lauren fashion, the dialogue between the hero and heroine had me literally laughing out loud more times than I can count. (Seriously, they write the BEST dialogue). At first I was a tad bit shocked at how direct and bawdy Fizzy is, but that’s only because I’m used to reading romance novel heroine’s who are shy and quiet. (In other words…BORING). I will say if you’re looking for a book with soft, flowery words and tear-inducing lovemaking then this probably isn’t the one for you. If, on the other hand, you like your lovin’ a little rough around the edges, intensely passionate, and earth-shattering then I highly recommend this book. As always, Christina and Lauren have once again served up a delicious treat that has left me happy, satiated, and eagerly awaiting the next wild ride. Well done, ladies! WELL.DONE!

Review - The Lonely Hearts Book Club

TITLE:
The Lonely Hearts Book Club
AUTHOR: Lucy Gilmore
RATING: ★★★★
RELEASE DATE: April 4th, 2023

Summary (from Goodreads): Sloane Parker lives a small, contained life as a librarian in her small, contained town. She never thinks of herself as lonely...but still she looks forward to that time every day when old curmudgeon Arthur McLachlan comes to browse the shelves and cheerfully insult her. Their sparring is such a highlight of Sloane's day that when Arthur doesn't show up one morning, she's instantly concerned. And then another day passes, and another.

Anxious, Sloane tracks the old man down only to discover him all but bedridden...and desperately struggling to hide how happy he is to see her. Wanting to bring more cheer into Arthur's gloomy life, Sloane creates an impromptu book club. Slowly, the lonely misfits of their sleepy town begin to find each other, and in their book club, find the joy of unlikely friendship. Because as it turns out, everyone has a special book in their heart—and a reason to get lost (and eventually found) within the pages.

REVIEW: This was my first time reading this author’s work, and I LOVED it. I’m a librarian, so I was instantly attracted to the plot, since Sloane is a librarian, and the many book references and book quotes throughout the story thrilled this old librarian’s soul. The book has five different viewpoints, and at first I thought this might be a little confusing, but it actually adds the perfect amount of depth to the story, and you get to know these five very different people on a more intimate level. All of these distinct personalities culminate into a thought-provoking, soul-stirring read that will grab your heart and not let go. (I was a sobbing mess by the time I finished the last few chapters). I would highly recommend this book to everyone, and I look forward to reading more of Lucy Gilmore’s work in the near future.
