Top Ten Tuesday - My Favorite Book Villains
September 09, 2025
Hello, dear readers! This week’s prompt from Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl is favorite villains. I had trouble coming up with ten, but here are six villains for you. Happy Tuesday!
🐶 Cruella deVille in the 101 Dalmations - Anyone who steals puppies or any other animal for cruel intentions places top spot on my villain list.
🍖 Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs - He’s a cannibal, and he’s also a genius. A dangerous combination.
⓬ President Snow in The Hunger Games - Cold and calculating. The perfect villain.
🐈 Professor Delores Umbridge in the Harry Potter series - I can’t put into words how much I absolutely DESPISE this woman. She’s just plain evil.
👠 The Stepmother from Cinderella - Was she ever given a name? If so, I don’t remember it. I’ve had my share of petty and conniving step-mother’s in my lifetime, but Cinderella’s takes the cake.
🪄 Voldemort from the Harry Potter series - Can’t finish out this list without including my favorite villain from my favorite book series. This dude has some serious issues, but the push and pull between him and Harry throughout the entire series is what makes these books so dynamic and magical. Love them!

Recipe - Cottage Cheese Queso
September 06, 2025
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup low-fat cottage cheese
- 1 tablespoon taco seasoning from a package
- 2 tablespoons canned Rotel tomatoes, drained, plus 1 tablespoon (for garnish)
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon chopped pickled jalapeño, drained (for garnish)
- 1/2 cup pepper jack cheese, freshly grated
- 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro (for garnish)
- tortilla chips, protein chips or crudités (for serving)
DIRECTIONS: Add the cottage cheese and taco seasoning to a small food processor or mini blender. Blend until completely smooth.
Heat a small skillet over medium heat and spray with oil. Add the tomatoes and garlic and sauté, stirring 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant. Add the cottage cheese mixture and stir until hot, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in pepper jack cheese and pickled jalapeño, until melted.
Transfer to a serving bowl and top with remaining tomatoes and cilantro. Serve with chips or crudités.
NOTES: This is best eaten the day you make it. If you’re making this for one or two, just divide the recipe. If you do have extra, you can refrigerate the leftovers.
Can top with ¼ pound cooked ground beef to add more protein. For a thicker dip, use whole-milk cottage cheese.

Review - The Secret Librarian
August 27, 2025
TITLE: The Secret Librarian (audiobook)
AUTHOR: Soraya M. Lane
NARRATOR: Sarah Zimmerman
RATING: ★★★
Summary (from Goodreads): New York, 1942: Avery is engaged to be married. Longing for adventure instead, she jumps at an unexpected offer to trade her library job for undercover intelligence-gathering in Portugal. But her new life in Lisbon, known as the Capital of Espionage, challenges everything she thought she knew about herself.
Local bookshop owner Camille, a French widow with access to the enemy newspapers and magazines Avery needs, befriends her. But are the rumors that swirl around Camille true—does she really have a Nazi boyfriend? And what secrets did she bring with her when she fled France? Avery must decide—fast—if she can fully trust Camille. Millions of lives depend on it.
As Avery discovers more about Camille’s world, she realizes that living in a city of spies will take all her courage. With suspicions growing, they are both playing a terrifyingly dangerous game. And not everyone will live to tell their story. Can Avery and Camille stay far enough ahead of their enemies to survive?
Threaded through with daring, sacrifice and love, this is the inspirational story of two women prepared to risk everything to help others survive the horrors of World War II.
REVIEW: If you've read most of my reviews, then you already know that adding "librarian" to any title piques my interest, and I'm all in. Add a World War II setting, and I'm definitely going to read it. This is a beautiful story of two admirable women from very different backgrounds who form a close bond while trying to help Jewish refugees during wartime. Some of the situations and outcomes were predictable, but it still held my attention from beginning to end, which is a big plus for me. If I could go back and change one thing, I would read the print book or digital book instead of listening to the audiobook. The narrator was good, but her voice is very breathy (if that's a word) and dramatic, which unfortunately distracted me most of the time. I don't really know how to describe it, but on a positive note her accents are lovely. I would recommend the print and digital versions of this book to all, especially World War II historical fiction lovers like myself.
(DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this title from NetGalley. All opinions expressed are entirely my own).

Top Ten Tuesday - Manifesting Fall 🍁
August 26, 2025
Hello, dear readers! This week’s prompt from Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl is a non-bookish freebie, and since I'm sooooooooo beyond tired of summer I decided to list ten things I'm looking forward to in the upcoming ‘ber months. Happy Tuesday!
🍁 Snuggling under a warm blanket with a good book and a mug of hot chocolate with mini marshmallows.
🍂 Wearing sweaters, jackets, and hoodies.
🍁 Visiting a local pumpkin patch with our grandchildren and drinking some apple cider while watching them having the time of their lives.
🍂 Mosquitoes, horseflies, and other bothersome insects go back to Hades where they belong.
🍁 Repainting and sprucing up my little free library when it’s cold so I don’t have to worry about being eaten alive by said mosquitoes, horseflies, and other bothersome insects.
🍂 Decorating for fall, Halloween, and Christmas at home and at work.
🍁 Planning a wedding for our youngest son.
🍂 Celebrating our granddaughter’s sixth birthday in October.
🍁 Watching sappy and always predictable holiday Hallmark movies.
🍂 Did I mention hot chocolate with mini marshmallows?
